11/16/13 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Monday

Last night when I had my parents over for dinner we started reminiscing about family dinners from when I was growing up.  The dinner I cooked for my dad (homemade mashed potatoes, chicken baked in sour cream, cream of mushroom, and white wine sauce) was a favorite growing up and a recipe that came from my grandma.  Throughout all my years I thought my family was health fanatics (and compared to most people they are) but we did have a lot of "meat and potatoes" kind of meals.  Another danger factor is that my Mom LOVES to cook.  She makes almost everything from scratch.  She would make homemade macaroni and cheese and it was just considered "healthy" because she would use whole wheat pasta; which as a kid I thought was weird.  I just wanted normal white bread and pasta like everyone else.  We discussed the pies she makes (apple, blueberry, rhubarb, peach, etc.) and homemade crust that is to die for.  We always had a huge garden where we would pick fruit and vegetables.  It's strange - I have such fond memories of family dinners from when I was a kid and a lot of them center around the dinner table and food!
