12/22/13 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Tuesday

by Katie (Jenny Craig 2009 Poster Girl) 23. December 2012 09:39

Today my husband and I are taking some time to ourselves.  We have six Christmas parties to attend until Saturday.  We thought some couple time would be much needed.  We decided to go see the movie "Blind Side," have you seen it yet?  I was hesitant to see it because I know it's about an inner-city boy that is mentored by an affluent suburban family.  The message I realize is going to be a good one about how a woman reaches out to a teenager that is homeless and can barely read or write.  The reason I wasn't sure if I wanted to see it was for two reasons:

First, my mom mentored a boy from about third grade to now from an inner-city family where the mom was so poor cockroaches crawled over them.  He had no bed and was always starving for food.  He ate a hot dog about once a week when he wasn't in school.  His clothes were always filthy.  He had a learning disability and my Mom worked at a center that reaches out to children in need.  She ended up mentoring him all the way until high school.  He's kept his nose out of trouble even though he lives in a crime infested neighborhood and overall just has a good heart.  He's been coming to many of our Christmas and Thanksgiving parties for years.  My Dad's family has even bought he and his family Christmas presents many times in the past.  Sadly, he was not a success story like the boy in the movie.  He is homeless currently, he has depression and aggression (from years of seeing violence and experiencing neglect wouldn't you be?) and without meds he has a difficult time controlling it.  We have taken him to all the proper venues of getting medicine, food stamps, and help, however, when you're homeless and your case manager can never find you because you don't have a working phone; it makes it extremely difficult to remain "current" in the system and get the things you need.  He is four credits short of graduating from high school.

The holiday season reminds me of why I need to be grateful and this movie and my own sadness about the boy we love that we couldn't save is difficult for me think about.  More on this story tomorrow...
