3/24/15 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Thursday

A lot of my friends and coworkers warned me when I was pregnant not to freak out whenever my son doesn't reach a "milestone" that a book suggests he should be reaching.  They even warned me not to compare him to other babies' milestones.  How is it that as a teacher I'm able to constantly remind myself that all my kiddos are different and needed to be treated as such and then when it comes to being my son - I forget this philosophy?  I start worrying when he isn't at a certain milestone.  For example, the parenting book I read that describes each week what your child should be doing, states that most babies are rolling over by 5 months.  Now I will admit our pediatrician said most likely 5-6 months.  But again, all my friends' babies rolled over by 5 months.  Our son is so close...he has everything but his head rolled over.  The back is arched and the legs are kicked in the air but it's as if he can't swing all his body parts around to completely do it.  I really think he may crawl before he rolls over!  He already scoots on his belly (when he allows me to put him on his belly!).  Some research has shown that if a baby skips crawling and goes straight to walking that it could be a red flag for lack of brain/muscle development.  It is not supposed to be something you bring up to your pediatrician until you see more than one milestone skipped.  So of course, the parent in me, is already worrying that if he doesn't roll over does that mean there may be some problems later in life?  I think I need to reassure myself with my teaching philosophy...all kids are different.  LOL, do you think I need to relax a little?  They say you start worrying when the baby is in the womb and then it never ends...
